Nehru Trophy Boat Race



Amongst the premier snake boat races in Kerala, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is one of the most celebrated events in the state held on the second Saturday of August every year. This event draws in a massive crowd to watch nearly 100 ft long boats compete against each other along with the cheers and tunes of old boat songs.

Held at Punnamada lake in Alleppey, contestants in their boats line up to battle against each other to win the title. The story of this epic regatta goes back to the year 1952 during Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's visit. Enchanted by the sight of snake boats, he donated a silver trophy in the shape of a snake boat as a gift for the moments and memories created during his visit in Kerala. Later, they went on to name the event in his name.

The ceremonial water processions, snake boats and other beautiful waterfloats make the area come to life during this event. The contestants put on a show that is thrilling and memorable for all.
